UK Skilled Worker Visa in 2026: Salary, Skill and English Rules Explained

3 min read

The Skilled Worker route remains one of the main ways to build a working life in the UK, but the rules are tighter than they were a few years ago. A job title alone is not enough: applicants must check the occupation code, skill level, salary, sponsor and English requirement together.

The standard salary threshold

For most new applications, the official Skilled Worker eligibility guidance says salary must be at least:

  • £41,700 per year, or
  • the published going rate for the occupation,

whichever is higher.

Some applicants can qualify on a lower threshold, including certain new entrants, people with relevant PhDs and roles covered by specific salary-list arrangements. Healthcare and education jobs can follow separate national pay-scale rules.

Do not compare only your offer with £41,700. Find the correct four-digit occupation code and check its going rate as well.

Most sponsored jobs now need a higher skill level

The usual Skilled Worker skill threshold was raised to RQF level 6, broadly graduate level. Some medium-skilled roles remain eligible only when they appear on the Immigration Salary List or Temporary Shortage List, or where transitional rules protect an existing worker.

Being capable of doing a job does not make that job visa-eligible. The occupation code chosen by the sponsor must match the real duties.

Transitional rules can produce different answers

People who entered the route before major rule changes may qualify under transitional salary or occupation provisions when extending, changing employer or updating their visa. Those provisions are detailed and time-limited.

This is why two people doing similar work can receive different answers. Record:

  • the date of your first Skilled Worker or Tier 2 permission;
  • the date each Certificate of Sponsorship was issued;
  • every occupation code used;
  • changes of employer or role;
  • absences from the UK.

These documents can matter later when extending or applying for settlement.

English requirements are becoming more important

New Skilled Worker applicants from 8 January 2026 generally need English at B2 level, unless they qualify through nationality, an accepted degree or another exemption.

The current Skilled Worker immigration rules also say that settlement applications made on or after 26 March 2027 will normally require speaking and listening at B2, subject to exemptions.

If your settlement date falls after that change, do not leave testing until the final month. Confirm which proof is accepted and how long results remain valid.

Does Skilled Worker still lead to settlement?

Yes. Current GOV.UK guidance says eligible Skilled Workers can usually apply for indefinite leave to remain after five years, provided they meet continuous residence, salary, sponsor, English and Life in the UK requirements.

There are proposals to redesign settlement, discussed separately below, but applicants should distinguish proposals from rules already in force.

Budget using take-home pay, not the visa threshold

A salary that satisfies immigration rules may still feel tight after tax, rent and commuting. Use the take-home pay calculator and UK relocation planner to test the practical budget for your destination city.

Before accepting an offer, verify the sponsor on the official register, confirm the occupation code in writing and ask whether the employer will pay any visa-related costs.
